FAQ

How long is the soccer season?

When you register in the Fall, you are placed on a team for both the Fall season and Spring season.  The Fall season lasts approximately 5-6 weeks beginning in late August.  The Spring season lasts only 4 weeks beginning in early April.

How do I determine which division my child should play in?

Normally, the division is determined by the child's age on August 1st.  For example, if your child is 10 on August 1st, he/she will play on a U11 (Under 11) team for both the Fall and Spring season (even if they turn 11 before the end of the Spring season.)  The coach and the WSC must approve exceptions to this rule.

When did the Willoughby Soccer League change its name?

In 2001, the members of the league voted to change the name to the Willoughby Soccer Club (WSC).

Is indoor soccer available through the WSC during the winter?

Indoor play is available throughout the Lost Nation Sports Park or the Heisley Racquet Club.  These leagues are not associated with the Willoughby Soccer Club.  Please notify your coach if interested.

What equipment do I need to play soccer?

The league will supply a uniform (jersey, shorts and socks).  Each player is responsible for having shin guards, soccer shoes and a soccer ball.

Is there open registration in the Spring?

Because the teams that played in the Fall stay together for the Spring season, we don not hold open registration in the Spring.  However, there may be a few openings left by players not returning.  If interested, please contact the club president.

Are there WSC meetings for coaches/parents to stay informed?

Yes, there is a WSC meeting held every month at the Field House on Grove Avenue in Willoughby.  Dates and times are typically listed on the WSC homepage.

Are your coaches formally trained?

The WSC offers our coaches training administered by the Ohio Youth Soccer Association.  However, recreation coaches are not required to attend.  In many instances, our coaches are parents who are just interested in helping out.  We also have coaches that have played soccer in high school or college.  All coaches are volunteers that care about the kids.

How can I become a referee?

Please contact the league referee coordinator.  There is training available through the Ohio Youth Soccer Association that will get you started.

Why did the WSC change the format for U8 games?

The Ohio Youth Soccer Association recommended a shift to "small-sided" games starting with the 2002 season.  This "small-sided" concept is intended to increase the number of times a player touches the ball, thereby giving players more activity and a better soccer experience.  The field is divided in two, creating two side-by-side games.
